The Verrazzano Narrows

... separates the Upper and Lower parts of New York Bay. It's effectively the mouth of the Hudson River. Brooklyn (which is on Long Island) lies on its east (true left) bank, and Staten Island on its west (true right) bank.

The Narrows are named after the Florentine explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano, who in 1524 (in the service of King Francis I of France) became the first European known to have entered the Upper New York Bay.
